Farmers attitudes to bridleways vary a lot. According to a recent Survey by the Country Landowners Association, younger and better educated farmers are more likely to be in favour of adequate and perhaps increased public access to their land. Similarly, those with riding families tend to be more favourable. But in general there is a negative attitude - and not surprisingly; under present arrangements farmers cannot make any money out of bridleways (access is free) - yet they have to spend money to maintain them, and they face the possibility of damage to crops and livestock if people misuse them.
So it's particularly important when bridle-riding to remember that, although you have the legal right to ride on the bridleway, you are doing so over someone else's land, out of which they make their living.
