The Dorset Downs
The Dorset Downs network covers most of central and eastern Dorset - a huge area with lots of different types of countryside including open chalk downs, wooded river valleys and wide open countryside with miles of grassy tracks. There are deserted dry chalk valleys or "bottoms" where you can believe you're in a time warp from a couple of centuries ago, with picture-postcard villages along the spring line below the downs. You'll see lots of wild flowers, banks of orchids, deer, buzzards, country houses and prehistoric stone circles.
This is a big network, with 9 hosts - so there are lots of different place to place ride combinations of between 2 and 6 days. The bulk of the network area is between Sturminster Newton, Dorchester and Blandford Forum, although there's an additional 2-day place to place ride between Tolpuddle and the coast at West Lulworth. There are 2 one-centre holidays, at Milton Abbas (with up to 4 petal rides) and Plush (2-3 petal rides). The going is generally good, although the centre of the network is quite hilly. Stables are patchy - the one centre holiday at Milton Abbas has several, but not all of the other hosts have them.
